Why hiring a Social Media Expert makes Cents

Not long ago, social media seemed new and different. It was to be treated differently and independently from your marketing strategy by “experts” only. And while some people still hold this view, social media is no longer marketing’s new thing. It is simply a part of today’s marketing.

The world of social media should be part of your media mix, the question is not whether you should use Facebook or Twitter, but how well will you use it?

But the most important reason to get involved is because companies find it really works! Read this list of what different companies are doing now on Social Media.

One of marketing heroes Seth Godin says if you are not being talked about you are boring. Social media offers you the chance to start conversations, engage with existing customers and listen to your market place in a very open and honest space.

So hire the right person, someone who knows how to implement a strategy that will have you talking to your target audience quickly.

3 Questions to ask before you Hire a Social Media Specialist

1. What level of person do you need to hire?

Well that depends on how involved you are, or want to be? Three levels of people can be looked at broadly, they will all add, monitor and analyse your inputs and outcomes. Content Creator: A person who focuses on developing new and engaging content for your various platforms, Community Manager: going one step further when it comes to engaging your followers and clients, Social Media Strategist or Director: They will research and build a cross  company policy and they need great influencing and political skills to make it happen.

2. What Department does Social Media Belong to?

They normally fall under P.R, Marketing or Communications, but its essential that’s its supported by the M.D and all senior managers.

Is your Company ready to embrace the changes this will bring?

When you hire a person to develop and manage your Social media, management needs to support the cultural change that needs to happen. It can’t be treated as a fad, or it wont work.

Social media people do not tend to be 9-5, they need some flexibility to work from off site locations and often putting the work in at odd hours.

Remember you are going to start getting feedback from your community, its can be both positive and negative. Its great feedback to listen to, it exposes weaknesses and flaws, chances for you to improve and grow.
