Politicians …. are they annoying you too!

I am up to my ears with politicians. This constant knee jerk reaction to a problem, then the other side doing anything to get attention… its marketing at its most annoying.

What the hell am I rambling on about… Well just today I heard Nick Clegg on his latest bandwagon that poor people need to get into posh universities.

I have a problem with this statement on a number of levels:

  1. I think it’s so condescending, it says over and over again that people (like me) who don’t go to university are never going to succeed and now they need to go to a top university … I am sure we all have a list of great successes that never went to university…
  2.  Our education system needs to change, we need to teach people about entrepreneurship, not about finding jobs, with the improvements in robotics and automation, there will be less and less need to employ anyone.
  3. And of course I just find the language so condescending!

I am not against people winning scholarships, as long as they get in on merit and not on sympathy.

    How refreshing to find someone with the same views as myself. I left school at 16 without a single ‘O’ Level, enjoyed a successful 23 year army career and have never been out of work for more than a few weeks. I have had success and failure in business and my personal life but that is what life is all about. I am currently MD of my own company and continue to enjoy working despite the fact that most of my contempories have retired.

    This is a perverse Western mentality that thinks to build people’s self esteem by not letting them fail (hence all the A’s and A*’s, and lack of meritocracy in school’s). In practice, however, the only way to build a person’s self esteem is to let them experience failure because they can’t experience success without that failure. There can’t be any success without failure. Success should be nurtured and protected. Not handed out for an average effort.

      No sure its a Western mentality – I have lived in different countries in the western world – and each has had a varing attitudes. But agree failing helps us to understand risk, encourages us to try again when it does not work for the first time.
